Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s Birthday is Celebrated as Teachers Day

All we know that, Dr. Sir Radhakrishnan was born in 1888 in Andhra Pradesh. Later, he opted to become Philosophy’s Professor in various prestigious Indian institutions like Madras Presidency College, Mysore University and University of Calcutta. India celebrates Teachers’ Day on 5 September 2021 to mark the birth anniversary of the great scholar, great philosopher, great teacher, and second Indian President Dr. Sir Sarvepalli Radhakrishnana. India’s Teacher’s Day celebrations are a month before World Teachers’ Day, which is on 5 October.

International Teacher’s Day, 1966

International Labuor Organization (ILO) and The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) celebrate International Teachers’ Day to commemorate the adoption of the “1966. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), recommendation on the Status of Teachers with respect to the rights and responsibilities of teachers, recruitment, employment and teaching and learning conditions, and the standards of their initial preparation and further education.

Dr. Radhakrishnana Remarkable President’s Tenure:
During his tenure as the President of India, from 1962 to 1967, his students and friends requested him to allow him to celebrate his birthday on 5 September. However, Dr Radhakrishnan denied such fanfare. Instead, he said that it would be a privilege if this day is celebrated as Teachers’ Day to recognize the contribution of teachers in the society.

Lecturer in Manchester

He was invited to lecture at Manchester College, Oxford, and was also invited to become the principal there. His 1929 Hibbert lecture at Manchester College was later published in the book “AN IDEALIST VIEW OF LIFE”.

Contribution Of Teachers In Our Lives:

Awarded With Bharata Ratna

Sir Radhakrishnan was awarded the title of “Sir”, but he refused to use it after India’s independence. Sir Radhakrishnan stuck to his academic title of “Doctor”. He never really stopped being a teacher and teacher in his life. Sir Radhakrishnan was nominated several times for the Nobel Prize. In 1984, Sir Radhakrishnan was awarded the Bharata Ratna (posthumously).

Educational institutions in the country celebrate the day with students preparing tribute speeches, poems etc. for their teachers. The President of India presents National Awards to selected teachers on this occasion.
To the honor of Dr. Sir Radhakrishnan’s remarkable vision towards education and students, India has been celebrating 5 September as Teachers’ Day since 1962.
