The districts where new medical colleges are being set up include Tiruppur, Tiruvallur, Nagapattinam, Virudhunagar, Namakkal, Nilgiris, Dindigul, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Ramanathapuram and Krishnagiri. The new medical colleges have been set up at an estimated cost of around Rs 4,000 crore, of which around Rs 2,145 crore is provided by the Center and the rest by the Tamil Nadu government.
Increased Seats:
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), there has been an increase of 79.61 per cent (from 51,348 seats to 92,222 seats) in MBBS seats and 80.71 per cent (from 31,184 seats to 56,374 seats) in PG seats during the last seven years. years.
New Medical Colleges with a cumulative capacity of 1,449 seats are being set up under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme ‘Establishment of New Medical Colleges attached to existing District OR Referral Hospital’.
The PMO said that before 2014 the total number of medical seats was around 82,501 and there has been a jump of around 80 per cent or 66,001 seats in the last seven years.
It added that the total number of medical colleges (both government and private) has increased from 387 to 597, an increase of about 54 per cent.
