From next year onwards, housewives, retirees and working professionals who want to pursue certain subjects but do not want a degree, may be able to attend classes with the regular students of Delhi University. Delhi University Vice Chancellor Y. Singh has said that the university is planning to start certificate courses for non-DU students from January next year.
You will get a certificate at the end and it will be added to your academic bank of credit. Applicant can be student and working person also. Retired person can also come and study. We are planning to start course-based registration for citizens. And they can come and take classes with university students, – he said.
Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh said that this will help those people who want to learn about a particular subject or skill but do not want to get a full-time degree. Some students only want to pursue certain subjects and do not want a degree.
Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) is a virtual warehouse that will hold digitally stored records of academic credit secured by a student. At the end of the course, students will get a certificate.
In an interview to PTI, the Vice-Chancellor said that the matter would be taken up in the next meeting of the Academic Council to be held on August 3.
The syllabus can be any subject for a particular program and for which applicants will come and sit with the DU students to earn their degree. The details in this regard are being prepared.
Elaborating further, he said, for example, three courses are being taught to the first-year students of BA (Hons.) Political Science and someone want to study about constitutional values, so they will be allowed to do so provided they fulfil certain eligibility criteria which will be decided. A person, who is not a Delhi University student, will be able to pursue a maximum of two courses at a time and the credits obtained will be added to his academic bank of credit.
In this way a student can gain eight credits in a year. And over the years they can take 176 credits and then get the degree. It is also good for housewives. They can come and acquire skills and learn just about anything they want to learn – the VC explained.
We are working out the details to fix the pre-requisite requirements and minimum age to pursue a particular course. We are thinking that a person will be allowed to do only two courses at a time. Otherwise, they will come here to earn their full degree, – he said.
