Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha, Pradhan said it would be introduced on a pilot basis from the academic session 2024-25 in some AICTE affiliated institutions.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that technical education in eight regional languages will be offered in some institutions on a pilot basis from the academic year 2024-25.
Regional languages include Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada and Malayalam.
This means that engineering school students will have the opportunity to study their courses in their mother tongue. This initiative is part of the implementation of the National Policy on Education (NEP) 2020.

Role Of SWAYAM

Pradhan informed that translation of reference material for engineering courses in regional languages under SWAYAM platform, which is offering online courses in subjects like science, engineering and technology, humanities and social sciences, law and management.
SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) was launched in July 2017 to enable learning anytime, anywhere. This is a part of the initiative of the Ministry of Education.

After a Gap of 34 Years

Engineering and technical institutions that wish to start programs in regional languages will have a separate AICTE approval process.

AICTE Tools Play An Important Role

The Minister said that an “AICTE Translation Automation Artificial Intelligence Tool” to translate English language online courses into eleven different languages like Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Assamese and Odia.

SIP Is Now Mandatory

He said the Student Induction Program (SIP), which is now a compulsory part of the curriculum for first year students in engineering, will also be delivered in regional languages.

As part of the NEP, the education ministry is also setting up a task force to prepare a roadmap for providing technical education in the mother tongue. This will include programs like B. Tech in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
This is to enable students from geographical areas to get access to technical education. Translated magazines will also be made available to these candidates.

Features of NEP 2020
