According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 58,097 new cases were reported in the country in the last 24 hours with 2,135 omicron cases in India on the morning of 5 January. Maharashtra has the highest number of 655 omicron cases. This is followed by Delhi and Kerala with 465 and 185 cases.
Several cities and states including Delhi, Mumbai, Odisha, Punjab and West Bengal have announced the closure of schools, colleges and other educational institutions amid the rise in the number of CORONA-19 cases in the country, including Omicron Edition.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister A. Pawar on Tuesday said that the administration has decided to close the schools for class 1 to 8 in Pune district till January 30 due to the rise in CORONA-19 cases. Speaking to reporters after attending a review meeting on the CORONA-19 situation, Pawar, who is also the district’s guardian minister, said that teaching in online mode would continue.
The decision comes a day after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation announced that schools for classes 1 to 9 and 11 in Mumbai will remain closed till January 31. “Looking at the rising cases of CORONA-19, we have decided to shut down the schools in Pune district for classes 1 to 8 till January 30”, Pawar said, adding that online teaching will continue for these classes.

The government also decided to close schools and pre-university colleges for two weeks except for students of class 10th and 12th.
Amid the rise in CORONA-19 and OMICRON cases in Bihar, schools for classes 1 to 8 in the state will remain closed till further orders. Meanwhile, higher education institutions, colleges can be reopened with 50 per cent strength from class 9 onwards.
