Chief Minister S. Singh Chouhan had recently announced that from the new academic session, Bachelor of Medicine, and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) courses will be taught in Hindi to first year students at Gandhi Medical College (GMC), Bhopal.
Although the Madhya Pradesh government has taken an important decision to introduce MBBS course in Hindi from the academic session 2022 and 2023, experts in the medical field have objected to the move due to non-availability of quality books in the language on the subject.

Madhya Pradesh is the first state to teach MBBS in Hindi

The driving force behind this move, State Medical Education Minister Vishwas Sarang said that Madhya Pradesh is the first state in the country which has taken the initiative to teach MBBS in Hindi.
At present medical education is given only in English. Apart from this, Shri Chouhan also announced that BTech degree and polytechnic diploma courses will be taught in Hindi language in six colleges under the National Education Policy (NEP) from July 2022.

Medical education is being given in mother tongue in Japan, Russia, China and France

When pointed out that many countries like Japan, Russia, China and France were providing medical education in the mother tongue, Chhaparwal said that these countries have sufficient number of quality textbooks in their native language, which was not the case. . India.
Instead of deciding in which language medicine and surgery should be taught, governments should leave the issue to the professionals, – he said.

MBBS with Tribal

If the government really wants to change the lives of tribals then it should start giving quality education from the very beginning, – remarked the former vice-chancellor.

He said that the government has set up a Hindi university in the state and entrusted it with the preparation of MBBS textbooks in the widely spoken language, but it will not benefit the students, especially the tribals.

Textbooks, especially in Physiology, Anatomy and Biochemistry, are being prepared in Hindi

Shri Sarang said that specially for the students’ textbooks in Physiology, Anatomy and Biochemistry are being prepared in Hindi and they will be made available soon. However, experts from the medical fraternity are sceptical about the “MBBS in Hindi” move.
We are starting MBBS course in Hindi for the first time in the country. No other state is offering medical education in mother tongue. Madhya Pradesh is the first state to do so.

A lot of preparations need to be translated into Hindi first as medical terminology

Minister Sarang said that the textbooks for the three subjects to be taught in the first year are being prepared by a team of experts. Mr. Sarang said, – Books are being prepared in such a way that technical terms like blood pressure, spine, heart, kidney, liver or other important organs of the body and related words are being written in Hindi.
