An IIT Hyderabad has developed a portable, cost-effective and IoT-enabled ventilator powered by a lithium-ion battery, which is now available for commercial use, they said on Friday. Telangana and Puducherry Governor T. Soundara – Rajan on Thursday launched a smart ventilator named “JEEVAN LITE”. Each unit costs Rs 4 lakh, while similar imported equipment costs Rs 10-15 lakh per unit.
Aerobiosis Innovation Private Limited, co-founded in 2019 by two young Bio – Design Innovation Fellows from the Centre for Healthcare Entrepreneurship at IIT Hyderabad, has designed the ventilator.
Maintenance of medical equipment was affected due to delay in import of some parts during the CORONA pandemic. Therefore, innovations like Jeevan Lite will improve healthcare facilities for the masses, – said Mr. S. Rajan.
According to IIT, the Internet-of-Things (IoT)-enabled ventilator operates seamlessly for five hours in synchronized intermittent compulsory ventilation, continuous compulsory ventilation, adaptive and hybrid modes of ventilation and is both invasive and non-invasive. It can be controlled through a smartphone app.
He added, – Jeevan Lite has all the necessary modes expected from an advanced ventilation system in an adaptable platform. It also offers a wide range of tools to immobilize the patient and help you remove them from the ventilator.
A senior IIT Hyderabad said, – It has been designed on the basis of turbine-driven flow method which provides independence from gas cylinders or compressors. It also comes with an integrated nebulizer with auto cut-off precise timer.
One of the officials said that the system has an intuitive user interface design with each function in a logical order so that practitioners do not have to navigate a complicated menu. In addition, both valves and flow sensors support autoclaving, a safety concept designed to meet current clinical trends protecting patients even under the most demanding conditions.
It can connect to an oxygen cylinder and operate automatically in ambient air. Accessories and consumables have been specifically developed for the highest possible patient safety and ease of use, – according to the statement. They added that the system also displays real-time information on breathing patterns and other important lung parameters.
It enables hospitals and institutions to choose between reusable and disposable parts as per their institutional policies.
