Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati an industry partner has developed an energy-efficient and eco-friendly technology for cookstoves for commercialization by its researchers to benefit the public. Developed by a research team headed by Professor P Muthu Kumar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, the technology was transferred to industry partner Agni-sumukh Energy Solutions Pvt Ltd, Bangalore for commercialisation, a release from IIT-Guwahati said on Friday.
Research Reaches the Society and Benefits the Common Man:
It added that the “POROUS RADIENT BURNER” provides fuel savings of 25 per cent to 50 per cent and can be operated with LPG, Biogas and Kerosene stoves. This will ensure that the benefits of research reach the society at large and benefit the common man. The MoU for transfer of technology was signed on Thursday in the presence of Professor T. Sitaram, Director, IIT-Guwahati, representatives of the institute’s faculty, researchers and industry partner, the release said.
This effort will be a major contribution of IIT Guwahati towards the Central Government’s efforts to increase access to clean cooking energy by promoting LPG, Biogas and Better Cook-stoves (ICs) through various policies and programmes.
Highlighting the unique aspects of “POROUS RADIENT BURNER”, Prof Muthu Kumar said, “These indigenously developed cookstoves equipped with specially designed Double Layered Porous Radiant Burners (PRBs) consume fuel in the range of 25-50 per cent. provide savings and reduce carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by almost 80 percent”.
India Will Give Huge LPG Savings of About 13 Lakhs:
He said that the newly developed PRB is ideally suited for both domestic as well as community Or commercial cooking for gaseous fuels like Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Biogas, Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and liquid fuels like Kerosene, Methanol and Ethanol. The research team at IIT Guwahati believes that the commercialization of PRB based LPG challahs across India will result in huge LPG savings of around 13 lakh domestic cylinders per day and will also have a global impact on burner-based applications.
Better Cooking Environment by Reducing CO and NO(x):
Speaking on the occasion of the signing of the MoU, IIT G Director Prof Sitaram claimed that the PRB-based cook-stove technology will play a vital role in reducing the overall fuel consumption in the cooking sector, thereby saving about Rs 50,000 crore. There will be huge annual savings.
