Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi will organize summer boot camps for class 11 and class 12 students. The boot camp named “CHANGE. MAKERS” will allow class 11th and 12th class students to use the institute’s state-of-the-art facilities to turn their impactful ideas into reality, an IIT statement said.
We urge change. Makers, i.e., students of class 11th and class 12th are passionate about transforming and creating things, so that they use their interests and skills to bring about a positive change in the society. Government initiatives on tinkering have helped in inculcating a culture of innovation and problem-solving mindset in school students.
Makers Summer Boot Camp will build on these initiatives by providing world class R&D facilities and mentorship to selected students committed to take their impactful products and solutions closer to implementation, – Professor J. Dhaliwal, Co-ordinator, “CHANGE. MAKERS” Summer Boot Camp, IIT Delhi.
The boot camp, IIT Delhi said in a statement, will begin with hands-on, rapid prototyping-based training in digital fabrication techniques. The training will take place at Makerspace (a DIY facility at IIT Delhi). After the training, the students will continue to take advantage of the facilities of IIT Delhi till the end of the boot camp to create projects aimed at addressing some high impact social problems.
The nature of the projects involves building an electro-mechanical prototype for the problem at hand. The kind of projects that are possible can range from building an air pollution monitor to a medical device for the visually impaired to smart furniture and more.
Professor P. Chandra, IIT Delhi said: We are very much hopeful that the DIY camp will help strengthen the relationships that teachers and students of IIT Delhi have already established with young minds in schools and academia. IIT Delhi is committed to popularizing science, and with this objective in mind, has recently proposed several outreach initiatives including the monthly lecture series SciTech Spins for high school students and STEM mentorship programs for girl students.
The non-residential boot camp will be organized from May 23 to June 24. The last date to apply for Boot Camp is May 7 or till the slot becomes available.
The boot camp will also provide an opportunity to the students of IIT Delhi to mentor these highly enthusiastic school students. This will further strengthen the DIY culture within the institute and the country.
