CBSE has announced the cancellation of the 12th board examinations, after which ICSE and CISCE have also cancelled the board examinations, the reason being the atmosphere of corona, therefore such decisions were taken keeping in view the safety of children from corona virus. Although many people are happy with this, many are not.
After the announcement of cancellation of 12th board exam on Tuesday, May 01, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Damodardas Modi has instructed the officials to prepare the exam results.
A committee of officials of the Central Board of Secondary Education has been formed which will now prepare the criteria related to this. They have started doing this work.
At present, the confusion regarding the 12th examinations has definitely ended, but the problem will now come to the fore, that too regarding admission in higher education. Doubts have arisen in many parents.
Till now there were two types of admission in different courses in relation to higher education. The first method where the cut-off list is prepared on the basis of cut-off i.e., on the basis of 12th marks and admission is given accordingly.
Another way where, based on competitive exams in vocational courses. Like JEE, NEET Exam, BBA, Journalism and Language Courses etc. The weightage of class XII marks may or may not be there, but is given on the basis of marks obtained in the entrance test. But this time the matter is different.
In such a situation, it will also have to be seen that what will be the effect of cancellation of examinations on admission to higher education on students and their families.
In this regard, Ashok Ganguly (who has been the former chairman of CBSE) says that in the current situation, it is first necessary to find the right way of evaluation. It is not only about scoring marks in the exam but also in terms of college admission.
“On the basis of preboard if we declare the results of the examination, will it be a proper evaluation? Will not done. It has to work on multiple paths and combinations. There can be more than one basis for internal assessment” – points out by Ashok Ganguly.
He has highlighted the problem and expressed his opinion on the solution. Like – First, some percentage of marks can be taken from the result of the students appearing in class XI. Second, there are some preboard exams given in class 12th, you can take some percentage of that. Third, small tests that children may have given in unit tests can be made a base point. Four-five instruments will have to be used for internal assessment.
Always remember that there is an emergency right now, at present the only objective should not be just to declare the result, but it is also necessary to have an authentic, reliable and correct evaluation so that justice can be done to the children.
Generally speaking, many children in class XII do not pay much attention to preboard, test or project. They prepare for the final exam. In such a situation, they can also be behind in points.
That’s why instead of making a point based on a single point, experts emphasize on many points. Right now each point will evaluate a student. But, the challenges at the level of admission in universities after the examination results are no less. Those will be the biggest challenges before the students.
The challenges are not just about how to deliver results, but also how to prevent errors. Ashok Ganguly says that various boards should think that it should not happen that there should be a lot of jumps in the numbers of children. If this evaluation is done in the school, then the numbers may increase. We have to bring such criteria for this so that it can be stopped.
What criteria to adopt for admission, in a new way – now universities and colleges will also have to consider this. Ashok Ganguly (who has been the former chairman of CBSE) believes that here too one tool has to be based on more than one tool. This time instead of sorting the children, adopt a new method of selection. Meritorious children may have to face difficulties. If the right way is not followed. Children studying in India do not get higher education only in the country. Many children also want to take admission in foreign universities. In such a situation, what will be the effect of the changes in the 12th examinations on them.
The results can be out by the beginning of July and children can apply abroad. There these results will be accepted. Ashok Ganguly says that there will be no problem with this. To some extent, the modes of admission to higher education may change. In the midst of these difficulties and challenges, experts also consider it an opportunity.
“It is a blessing mixed with a curse. This will reduce the cut-off competition which used to be cut-throat earlier. The cut-off can no longer reach 100 marks. But we also have to prepare the way forward” – says Ashok Ganguly.
Ashok Ganguly says that ‘Like the education system of many other countries, we also have to bring an early assessment at least in 10th and 12th in the coming session so that we can properly evaluate the children in the event of such an epidemic. Students have to give the result of the examination without any examination, which is not less than any challenge.
