Happy Independence Day: Some Facts About Tricolour, Hoist, Unfurl.

Across the nation, the national flag is hoisted to commemorate Independence Day (“Independence Day”). However, on this occasion, it is equally relevant to note the fundamental difference between hoisting the flag on Independence Day (August 15) and hoisting the tri-colour on Republic Day (January 26).
India will celebrate its 75th Independence Day with full zeal and enthusiasm on 15 August 2021. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unfurl the national flag at the Red Fort and address the nation from the ramparts of the iconic building.

Status of “National Flag”

On 15th August (Independence Day), the tricolor is tied and placed under the pillar. The Prime Minister lifts (pulls) it and hoists it to honor the historic event of Independence Day.

Whereas, on Republic Day (January 26), the national flag is sealed and tied at the top of the pole, which is then hoisted without pulling. This activity is done to mark that the nation is already independent.

The Power to “hoist” or “unfurl” the “tri-colour”

The other pertinent difference is that, on Independence Day, the prime minister of the country, being the head of government, hoists the flag. Whereas, on the occasion of Republic Day, i.e. 26 January, the President of India being the first citizen of the nation as a constitutional head hoists the flag upon attending the event.

Place Of Celebration:
The flag is hoisted at the Red Fort on Independence Day, New Delhi. The Prime Minister addresses the nation from the ramparts of ‘Red Fort’. Whereas, on Republic Day, celebrations take place at Rajpath in the national capital. The President hoists the flag at Rajpath.

“Independence” and “Republic Day” Activities

On August 15, the flag hoisting ceremony takes place in the national capital, which is followed by the PM’s address to the nation. Whereas, on Republic Day, a march by the three Indian security forces (Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force), the tableaux of all the states and union territories are usually paraded along the Rajpath.

Like in the year 2020, the celebration of the 75th Independence Day will be restricted to the public and there will be no cultural performances by school children due to the COVID pandemic.
