Its results help to compare performance across the spectrum and across populations to find the desired direction for improvement.
Mr Sawant said the performance of the affiliated schools should be improved as it is the government which provides salaries and other grants. NAS 2021 indicates that Goa students have performed worse than the national average in mathematics, language, social sciences and sciences.

The chief minister said the state government was seriously concerned about the NAS report 2021. He said 80 per cent of students in Goa attend aided schools and the government provides grants to help them.
Mr Sawant said teachers should teach “full-time” without any side-business, leading to confusion. The CM, who also holds a portfolio of education, said that due to the increase in the number of governments aided schools, the number of schools run by the state government has declined significantly.
Actually, we are below the national average in mathematics, he said. The national average is 32 percent and we are 30 percent in 10th grade. In Class 8, the national average is 36 percent and we are at 32 percent. In fifth grade the national average is 44 percent and we are at 39 percent. For the third class, the national average is 57 percent and we 55 percent.
