The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has warned 253 out of its 943 affiliated schools in Bihar against giving enhanced marks to its Class X students and directed them to redo the moderation of marks. The board has asked the schools to follow the marking or assessment policy formulated by them.
The circular states that after an analysis of the uploading of marks by the schools, it was observed that some schools have not done so and have distributed the marks in the upper brackets of the given reference range – Instead of dividing the theory marks in the 70-80 range, the marks are bunched in the 77-80 range.
“It is really unfair to deserving candidates whose performance will fall in this range of marks” it said.
CBSE has sent the list of schools with more than the historical performance. These schools include St. Michael’s High School, Delhi Public School, Notre Dame Academy, Loyola High School, St. Karen’s High School, St. Dominic Savio High School and various branches of DAV Public Schools.
The authorities of most of these schools claimed that the board has objected to allotting higher marks to the top scorers and they have to reshuffle the marks of all the students to avoid injustice to the deserving candidates.
CBSE city coordinator and Baldwin Academy principal Rajeev Ranjan Sinha said his school’s name was not in the list as they have followed the marking pattern. He said that as per the guidelines of CBSE, the candidates who got 96 or more marks should be reviewed and revised.
Glenda Galston, principal of St Dominic Savio High School, said the format was called “Historical Reports of the Last Three Years” and accordingly, points were accumulated.
“Therefore, we have submitted the previous report only because there was no child to whom we have given extra marks. In some subjects only 2-3 students got 96 marks. Otherwise, we haven’t made much changes,” she said.
Shailendra Mohan Jha, vice-president of Gyan Niketan Boys School, said that they received the letter from the board on Tuesday evening and the revised marks were uploaded on Wednesday.
“As per our data update, around 10-15% of the 408 students in class X were getting marks above 95 including theory and practical. We revised the marks and sent them again,” he said.
Litera Valley School Principal Sharat Kumar Singh said that the school and the moderation body have followed the pattern given by the board.
“Most schools in Bihar have not taken internal assessment. We have documentary evidence to show that the marks have not been increased,” he said.
