The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Thursday submitted to the Supreme Court the 40:30:30 formula for evaluation of marks of Class XII students based on their Class XII, Class XI and Class X results respectively.
As per the formula, the theory marks for each subject will be calculated using 40% from the marks obtained in the subject pre-board or mid-term examination conducted by their schools earlier this year, their class XI final examination marks. 30% from their, and 30% from their class X board exam results. This will be added to the actual marks that they got in their Class XII internal assessment and practical examination for that subject.

How will the 30-30-40 percentile for Theory Marks be calculated?

For Class XII, it will be based on the performance of the students in one or more Unit Tests, Mid-Term or Pre-Board Theory Examination in each subject. This will be left to the discretion of “results committees” to be constituted in each school, consisting of the school principal, the two seniors most teachers of the school and two teachers teaching Class XII in the neighbouring school.
“For example, if the committee may be of the view that only pre-board examinations can be taken into account, full weightage may be given to that component. Similarly, another school result committee may decide to give equal weightage to pre-board examinations and mid-term examinations,” read the details of the tabulation policy in the board’s notification in previous news.

For the Class XI component, the calculation will be based on the marks in the subjects related to the final theory examination at the end of the year that the students had written in 2019-2020.
In the Class X component, the average of the theoretical marks of the three main subjects will be calculated in which a student performed best in his/her Class X board examinations. This average will be awarded equally to all the subjects of class XII on the basis of theory weightage of each subject.

What will the final table look like after all these calculations?

There are different theory-internal assessment/practical break-ups for the subjects of the students in class XII. Some have 80 marks for theory and 20 for practical, 70 for theory and 30 for practical and 30 for theory and 80 for practical. Most of the schools have already completed the internal assessment and practical’s for all the subjects and the schools which have not completed the same have been asked to conduct the remaining examinations online. These marks will be added to the Computed Theory Marks in each subject.

What standardization process will be conducted?

Each school will have to internally moderate the marks keeping in view the school level variations in the marking of students in the internally conducted examinations of class XI and XII. A historical performance reference will be used as the anchor. It will be the school’s performance in whichever of the last three years’ board exams it performs best.
For each subject, the school has to follow a broad distribution of marks which will be based on the performance of that school in that subject for the specific year.
The subject wise marks assessed by the school for 2020-2021 should be within the range of + / – 5 marks obtained by the students in the school in the subject in the reference year. However, moderation process the aggregate average marks for the school assessed in 2020-2021 for all subjects should not exceed 2 marks more than the aggregate average marks obtained by the school in the specific reference year,” states the tabulation policy on the technicalities of the school.

What will happen to the student who does not get the passing marks through this table?

Students who fall short in one subject will be placed in the ‘compartment’ category, and compartment exams will be conducted after the result is declared to give them a chance to clear that subject. Those who fall short in more than one subject will be placed in the “required repetition” category.

What about the students who are not happy with the assessment?

Students who are not satisfied with the method of evaluation or the marks obtained by them will be allowed to appear in the written examination conducted by the Board “when the conditions are favourable for conducting the examination”.
The marks they get in this optional exam will be considered as the final marks.
