As per the revised promotion policy, a maximum of 15 grace marks can be awarded to a student for reaching the required 33 per cent marks in one or any subject. Therefore, if a child secures 18/100 in his aggregate (including theory and practical internal assessment), awarding 15 grace marks will make him eligible to be promoted to the next class, – NPSC Chairman S Acharya in his central letter Said Board of Secondary Education equivalent.
According to the revised policy issued by DoE on Friday, promotion will be based on marks obtained in internal assessment, project, practical, and marks obtained in mid-term (term-1), annual (term-2) test. Or taken all together. The revised policy 2020 and 2021 is an extension of the promotion policy.
Acharya further said that the provision of such a low target for promotion under the revised policy would be extremely disappointing for both teachers and students. Teachers will lack motivation to set milestones for students and students will hardly appreciate the real value or value of education in such a relaxed system, – she said.

Also, as per the amended rules, a child who fails to secure 33 per cent marks is eligible to appear in compartment examination of all the subjects in which he has failed to secure 33 per cent. The cause for concern is that appearing for compartment exams in all subjects will be tantamount to re-examination. This will also not reveal how much knowledge the child has actually acquired and will further widen the learning gap that has already been created during the two long years of the pandemic – he said.
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has opened the registration portal for the National Entrance Examination for Residential Education Scheme (SHRESTA) for Scheduled Caste students in high schools in the targeted areas. The scheme, being launched from the academic year 2024-25, seeks to provide scholarships covering almost all educational expenses to the meritorious students of class 9 and 11 from scheduled caste communities.
To be eligible for registration, the annual income of the parents of the candidate should be less than Rs 2.5 lakh.
The exam will be conducted in all the states and union territories:
Students willing to appear for the exam can register online at shreshta.nta.nic.in. The last date to apply is 14th April. About 3,003 seats will be provided in class 9 and class 11 in fully funded central government schools. The date of entrance exam is 7th May. The exam will be conducted in all the states and union territories. SC category students studying in class 8 and class 10 will be eligible to apply for the exam.
