The Calcutta High Court quashed the expulsion of three students by the Visva-Bharati University authorities that led to a deadlock in the prestigious institution, the Calcutta High Court said on Wednesday, saying the noble cause of education should be treated as the altar of politics and a political struggle.
Students and others had cordoned off the official residence of Visva-Bharati Vice Chancellor Vidyut Chakraborty since August 27 and allegedly closed several university offices in Santiniketan. The gherao was lifted on the September 3 order of the High Court after a petition was filed before the Vice-Chancellor.
Three Students Could Not Cause The “Catastrophe”:
Observing that only three students could not “devastate” the university, but have the support of influential outsiders, Justice Rajasekhar Mantha observed that educational institutions were being misused by political parties. This Court is also compelled to observe that the Vice-Chancellor and the Management should adopt a more conducive, accessible and inclusive approach in dealing with the affairs of the University, particularly those of Professors, Faculty, Staff as well as students.
