According to a report by Team Lease EdTech titled “Digital Transformation of the Teaching Community”, due to the sudden transition to online teaching, most teachers (close to 79.33 percent) learned by practice or by doing.
Even after two years of rapid digitization, a report showed that about 31 per cent of teachers are still not highly proficient with digital tools.
It’s been more than two years since we’ve seen a sudden, unplanned, overnight shift to digital learning.
Team Lease EdTech Founder and CEO said- In September 2020, six months into the pandemic, when we conducted a survey for our study on ‘Use of Technology in Teaching and Learning in Indian Higher Education Institutions‘, more than 80 percent of teachers were Was uncomfortable with online learning. He said that even after a lapse of two years, 30.61 per cent teachers are yet to achieve their full proficiency.
Digital learning is here to stay and with the continuous increase in the integration of digital systems with traditional learning, upskilling and reskilling the learning community on a regular basis will be crucial. The report was done through a survey with over 1,000 teachers across India. In fact, 66.95 percent of them felt that these new skills opened up better career opportunities for them. Interestingly, the report also found that 90.09 percent of teachers have access to technical and pedagogical skills acquired in the last two years.
The report also found that there are challenges in the digital learning space. More than 75.03 per cent teachers feel that students lose interest during online classes and 44.64 per cent teachers feel that both students and teachers are still uncomfortable with digital integration.
The report said that from the infrastructure point of view, 65.30 per cent teachers feel that internet connectivity is a challenge and 50.40 per cent of them feel that students lack dedicated laptops or smartphones.
He said that at present 79.35 percent teachers are undergoing training in some form or the other by the institutes or are taking online or MOOC courses.
