Class 7 Maths Exercise 2.3 Extra Questions

Write down the reciprocal of: (i) 3/7 (ii) 1/5 (iii) 6 (iv) 3(5/8)

We have:
(i) Reciprocal of 3/7 = 7/3
(ii) Reciprocal of 1/5 = 5/1 = 5
(iii) Reciprocal of 6 = 1/6
(iv) Reciprocal of 3(5/8) = Reciprocal of 29/8 = 8/29

Find Reciprocal of 3(5/8).

We have:
Reciprocal of 7(8/11) = Reciprocal of 85/11 = 11/85

Divide: (i) 28 by 7/4 (ii) 36 by 6(2/3)

We have:
(i) 28 by 7/4 = (28/1)/ (7/4) = (28 x 4)/ (1 x 7) = 4 x 4 = 16
(ii) 36 by 6(2/3) = (36/1)/ (20/3) = (36 x 3)/ (1 x 20) = 108/20 = 27/5 = 5(2/5)

(i) Flip the divisor into a reciprocal.

How do I divide a fraction by a whole number?

To Divide a Fraction by a Whole Number:
Multiply the bottom number of the fraction by the whole number. Step 2. Simplify the fraction (if needed)

A rope of length 9(3/4) m is cut into 6 pieces of equal length. Find the length of each piece.

Length of the rope = 9(3/4) m = 39/4 m
Number of equal pieces = 6
Length of each piece = (39/4)/6
= (39 x 1)/ (4 x 6)
= 39/24 = 13/8 = 1(5/8) m
Hence, the length of each piece is 1(5/8) m

Reciprocal of a Fraction

Two fractions are said to be the reciprocal of each other, if their product is 1.
For example, 4/9 and 9/4 are the reciprocals of each other, since (4/9) x (9/4) = 1
In general, if a/b is a fraction, then its reciprocal is b/a.

Note: Dividing two fractions is the same as multiplying the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction. The first step to dividing fractions is to find the reciprocal (reverse the numerator and denominator) of the second fraction. Next, multiply the two numerators. Then, multiply the two denominators.

Division of Fractions

Rule: To divide a fraction by another fraction, the first fraction is multiplied by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
Thus, (a/b)/(c/d) = ad/bc
Example:
Simplify: (i) (4/9)/ (5/6) (ii) (5/7)/10
We have:
(i) (4/9)/ (5/6) = (4 x 6)/ (9 x 5) = 24/45 = 8/15
(i) (5/7)/(10/1)= (5 x 1)/(7 x 10) = 5/70 = 1/14
