Chords and Arcs of a Circle
Chord of a circle:
A line segment with its end points lying on a circle is called the chord of the circle.
Clearly, diameter of a circle is its largest chord.
Arc of a circle:
Any part of a circle is called an arc of the circle.
Minor and Major Arcs:
Of the two parts of a circle determined by a chord KL, the smaller part is called the minor arc and the greater part is called the major arc of the circle.
Circumference of a Circle:
The perimeter of a circle is called its circumference. In other words, the length of the boundary of the interior of a circle is its circumference.
Secant of a circle:
A line passing through a circle and intersecting the circle at two points is called a secant of the circle.
Class 6 Maths Exercise 5.5 Important Question with Answer
Name circular objects used in dailly life.
Here’s a visual list of things that are circular:
(i) CD.
(ii) Bike Wheels.
(iii) Frisbee.
(iv) Ring.
(v) Bangle.
(vi) Hoop Earring.
(vii) Coins.
(viii) Vinyl Record.
How many arcs are there in a circle?
A diameter of a circle divides it into two equal arcs. Each of the arcs is known as a semi-circle. So, there are two semi-circles in a full circle. The degree measure of each of the semi-circles is 180 degrees.
What is a major sector of a circle?
A sector is a region bounded by two radii of a circle and the intercepted arc of the circle. A sector with a central angle greater than 180° is called a major sector.
Segments of a Circle
A chord of a circle divides the circular region into two parts. Each part is called a segment of the circle.
The segment containing the minor arc is called the minor segment and the segment containing the major arc is called the major segment of the circle.
Semicircle and Semicircular Region:
Semicircle
The end points of a diameter of a circle divide the circle into two parts, each part is called the semicircle.
Semicircular Region
A diameter of a circle divides the circular region into two equal parts, each part is called a semicircular region.
Class 6 Maths Exercise 5.5 Extra Questions with answer
How many sectors are in a circle?
Two sectors, When two radii meet at the center of a circle to form a sector, they actually form two sectors. One of the sectors is larger than the other, unless they are both semicircles in which case they are the same size. The larger sector is called the major sector and the smaller sector is called the minor sector.
Which sector has the greatest angle?
Major sector has the greater angle.
What is arc of circle?
An arc of a circle is any portion of the circumference of a circle. To recall, the circumference of a circle is the perimeter or distance around a circle. Therefore, we can say that the circumference of a circle is the full arc of the circle itself.
Sector of a Circle
The minor arc makes a minor sector. The major arc makes a major sector.
What are the main topics to study in exercise 5.5 of class 6 Maths?
In exercise 5.5 of class 6th Maths, students will study all about perpendicular lines (When two lines intersect and the angle between them is a right angle, then the lines are said to be perpendicular. If a line AB is perpendicular to line CD, we write AB⊥CD).
