The full form of NBA is Nagpada Basketball Association of Mumbai.

Afsana Mansurihas is a girl who jumped over the wall which was between her jhuggi and the local basketball court. She was a girl who washed utensils. Today, Afsana has become a strong wall of NBA, the Nagpada Basketball Association of Mumbai and is a source of strength for five other girls who have come to the basketball court, leaving behind the problems of their everyday lives. Today, she is the star of a young team.

Bacchu khan is a trainer who trained the children to play games. His native place was Mumbai. His original name was Mustafa Khan. He is a famous Basket ball player. It is because of Bacchu Khan’s devotion and training that the players from that area of Mumbai are able to compete with the teams of other countries.

Games is an activity which a person or a team usually play for enjoyment and relaxation whereas sports is that activity which is taken up to compete against another person or team.

The game in which a single player plays against another single player is called an individual game.

The game in which a team of players play against another team of players is called team game.

Team Spirit means that each and every player is an important part of the team. The team members play in unison and understand each other’s strength and weakness. They not only co-operate with each other but also co-ordinate towards achieving the goals. They are not interested in showing their individual performance and talent but they work together as team for achieving the aim.

Noor Khan was the coach of the Nagpada Basketball association. He had trained the children of that area of Mumbai. Today his team has some players who play at the international level. Some have even won the Arjuna Award. He had also prepared a girls’ team which plays for the Maharashtra State team. They practice well with good discipline. Girls and boys of this association come from different types of families. Some are from poor homes, some from richer. Some study in Urdu medium and some in English. But they all play as team.

Girls also participating in the sports matches or are a part of various sports teams like cricket team, hockey team etc. They are playing in Olympics and commonwealth games too for their country and bringing medals and laurels to India. They are being encouraged to develop their skills in all types of sports. In certain games, girls have proved that they are better than boys. Example- Anju Bobly George has won many championships in women athletics, Sania Mirza in tennis, Sania Nehwal in badminton, Anjali Bhagwat in pistol event and Joshma Chinnappa in squash have made a great name for themselves. This is how they are contributing towards sports.

Taking part in games develop a number of qualities such as:
• confidence,
• accepting defeat,
• hard work,
• dedication.
• co-operation,
• association,
• coordination
• play as a team.

Girls were not encouraged to play sports in early times because of the mind -set of the people who thought women were very weak, and could get injured. The old thinking of people that girls should help in household works not in sports or other things. So, girls were not allowed to play freely like boy as from ages girls are treated low and weak by the society making them loose their confidence. Girls are being encouraged equally on par with men.

Gender bias is the tendency to prefer one gender over another. Gender bias is a behaviour that shows discrimination toward one gender over another. Most often, gender bias is the act of favouring men and boys over women and girls.

Gender bias affects the society as it creates inequality amongst both the genders. It creates a gap between boys and girls. Gender determines how males and females should think, speak, dress and interact within the society. Gender roles influence men and women in almost every aspect of life. Due to this gender bias woman are either unemployed or underemployed. They are paid less than men and are often give less opportunities as compared to men.

The players be recognized in a society by their work and their ability to play rather than by their caste or economic status. All the players whether they belong to a rich family or a poor family, or are from high status or low should not be judged on the basis of that, or on the basis of their education but they should be recognized for their passion for the game and their efforts in achieving their goals.

Good coordination can improve your ability in sport. It can help prevent all kinds of injuries and help in staying more effective as you age. If there is no or inadequate coordination, the team members will have difficulty in getting information from each other, completing the tasks, and making decisions. It will affect the overall performance of the team.

Nagpada Basketball association is the Basketball association in Mumbai. It is a special basket ball team of girls. This team of girls is known for their guts and courage. All the girls in this team have overcome various problems in their life and are now players of a successful basket ball team.

Playing as a team is important because cooperation between the team is the pillar on which the team stands. It gives strength to the players. The players understand each other and support each other well. Even if each player in the team is excellent, the team can lose a match if all the players do not play together as a team. To play together as a team it is important to understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. So, it is important to stand for each other rather than standing against each other.

Outdoor games refer to any such game which can be played outside. Badminton, cricket, etc are examples of outdoor games. Outdoor games need the use of physical strength. Majority of outdoor games need big grounds Indoor games are actually referring to any game which must be played indoor or inside, away from the interference of weather (rain, wind, etc.). Indoor games demand the use of intellectual/mental strength. Indoor games can be played in small space.

The title of the chapter ‘Across the wall’ conveys that there is a wall which is stopping the girls from coming forward and show their talents. They are being discriminated by their own parents as well as the society and are being deprived of what they can do or achieve. It is a wall of inequality amongst boys and girls.

The boys were lenient with the girls while playing games as they thought that the girls were physically unfit and not strong in comparison to them. As per them the girls are weak and will not be able to compete against them. Thus, they were lenient with them while playing games with them.

The girls were told to play games as players not as girls because they wanted to encourage the girls and make them understand that they are not less than the boys and thus instead of thinking like others that girls are physically weak than boys, play the game confidently. This was done to make the girls realize their potential and to give them the feeling that they are equal to the boys and can give their best.

The girls learnt not only how to play the game properly with its rules but they also learnt that they are not less than the boys. They also learnt that they have to learn as team and have to play as team together for the team and not for themselves as an individual. Girls understood the importance of cooperation and team spirit while playing the game.

Yes, girls and boys can play same games because girls are also not less than boys. They can compete together, because boys and girls are almost the same size and weight. If both are given same kind of training and opportunities, then both can play together the same game. For example- we have Women’s Indian Cricket team as well as Men’s Indian Cricket team
