Active and Passive Voice
Consider the following two sentences: 1. The hunter killed the deer. 2. The deer was killed by the hunter. Do you know, what is the difference between these two sentences? In sentence 1, the subject (hunter) is the doer of the action. In other words, the subject of the verb acts or is active. The verb (killed) is therefore, said to be in the Active Voice. In sentence 2, the subject (deer) is the receiver of the action. In other words, the subject of the verb does not perform the action or is not active, or is passive. Here the Subject of the verb is acted upon. The verb (was killed) is therefore, said to be in the Passive Voice.
Main difference between Active and Passive Voice Sentences:
1. The Active Voice denotes that the subject of the verb is the doer of the action or is active.
2. The Passive Voice denotes that the subject of the verb is the receiver of the action or is passive.
So we see that when a sentence is changed from the Active form to the Passive, the Object of the Active Verb becomes the Subject of the Passive Verb.
