Pollination is the act of transferring pollen grains from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma. Seeds can only be produced when pollen is transferred between flowers of the same species.

In Uttarakhand there is a place where flowers are found everywhere. Thus this place is called the ‘Valley of Flowers’. The people paint the walls and courtyards of their houses with these paintings. These are pictures of flowers, human, animals, birds , trees etc which are made on festivals and special occasions.

The colours used in these paintings are mixed with the paste of powdered rice in which the extracts of various flowers and trees are used.. To make them, indigo (Neel), turmeric (Haldi), colours from flowers and trees, etc., are used. That is why the colours are considered special.

We can also see Madhubani painting on flower vases, bed sheets, wall posters.

We should not pluck the flowers as they are the reproductive part of the plant. They help to produce fruits and seeds which grow into a new plant. Also plucking flowers will make the plant look bare resulting in reducing the beauty of nature.

Buds are enclosed by sepals which open to bloom into a flower.If the buds are plucked then there would be no growth of the flowers and this would result in lesser number of fruits and seeds.

The flowers can be used in different ways for eating for example-
• Cauliflower, broccoli, banana flower are eaten by us.
• In Uttar Pradesh, people enjoy eating a vegetable made of kachnar flowers.
• In Maharashtra people love pakoras made of sahjan flowers.
• In Kerala,people cook a vegetable made out of banana flowers.

Some flowers are used in making medicines or are used as medicines .For example- neem, tulsi, aloe vera,Saffron and rose water made out of rose flower

The other uses of Flowers are as follows-
• They are used for making perfumes , scents and soaps like rose, jasmine, lavender, lily etc
• They are used for making colours which are used in Madhubani paintings and for making rangoli like marigold, hibiscus,zenia etc. They are also used to dye clothes
• They are used for religious ceremonies like jasmine,lotus, marigold, rose etc
• They are also used for birthdays and marriages or other occasions like orchids, rose, chrysanthemum etc
• They are also used for decoration during marriages, parties or pujas like gladiolas, marigold, lavender etc

It is a small bottle of scent made from lots and lots of flowers

As per Granny’s recipe mix equal part of rose water and glycerine. Fill this in a bottle. Add a few drops of lemon juice. In winters use this mixture on your skin. Your skin will not crack or dry.

Three festivals where flowers are used are: Diwali, Ganesh Chathurthi and Onam

People buy flowers for various reasons like-
• For eating , making medicines, decoration of their houses
• During festivals, marriages, pujas
• For gifting purpose during marriage or any other occasion
• To convey their messages and feelings also people buy flowers
• Some are involved in the business of making perfumes, scents, soaps etc so they buy flowers
• Some buy flowers as they are good for mental health and reduce stress, so to pamper them and have a feel good factor, people buy flowers

Creepers: Creepers are plants that creep on the ground. They have very delicate, long, thin stems that can neither stand erect nor support all its weight. Examples include watermelon, strawberry, pumpkin and sweet potatoes.
Bushes: Bushes or Shrubs are medium-sized, woody plants which are taller than herbs and shorter than a tree. Their height usually ranges between 6m to 10m tall. Their features include bushy, hard, and woody stems with many branches. Although stems are hard, they are flexible but not delicate.
