Class 3 Science Chapter 4 Nestling Habits of Birds
Nestling Habits of Birds
Birds need a shelter to protect themselves from heat, cold and rain. They build nests to lay eggs and to raise their young ones. Birds choose their nestling place with great care. Their nests must be safe from enemies and they must protect them from bad weather.
Birds use different kinds of materials like grass, twigs, feathers, papers, hair, leaves and pieces of clothes to build their nests. In India, birds build their nests mostly in the months of February and March. Let us see how some birds build their nests and make them cosy.
The Tailor Bird
The tailor birds are masters in sewing. They use their beaks like a needle to sew leaves. They generally use discarded thread and wool as a sewing material. They also put cotton, wool and dry grass to make their nests more comfortable.
Eagle
The eagle makes a simple nest by using sticks. It puts them together in the shape of a shallow cup.
Bulbul
A bulbul builds its nest in hedges and bushes. Its nest is like a deep cup. This kind of nest protects the eggs and babies from falling down.
The Woodpecker
The woodpecker uses its beak to make hole in the tree trunk. It puts some chips of wood inside the hole to make it cozy. This way it makes its nest.
Penguin
The penguin is a flightless bird. It makes its home on the ground using pebbles and stones.
The Vulture
The vulture gathers a few sticks and simply puts them on a high branch of the tree in the shape of a hollow cup.
The Cuckoo (koel)
The cuckoo (koel) does not build its own nest. It lays its eggs in the nest of another bird like crows. When the young ones hatch out from the eggs, parent crows take care of the young ones. Thus, cuckoo is considered a lazy but clever bird.
Caring for The Young Ones
Birds are good parents. They look after their young ones very carefully. After laying eggs, the mother bird sits on them for many days to keep them warm. The father bird protects them from enemies. Baby birds come out of eggs after a few days.
