About 12 Maths Exercise 5.8
In Exercise 5.8, we have to check whether the following conditions of Rolle’s Theorem is satisfied or not.
- Function is continuous in closed interval [a, b].
- Function is differentiable in open interval (a, b).
- For the function f(a) = f(b)
Rolle’s theorem
If all the three conditions of Rolle’s theorem is satisfied, then according to theorem there should be a value c of x in open interval (a, b) such that f'(c) = 0. Putting f'(c) = o, we can get the required value of c and verify the Rolle’s theorem for the given function. In Mean Value Theorem we have to check only two following conditions:
- Function is continuous in closed interval [a, b].
- Function is differentiable in open interval (a, b).
- If both are true, then we can find a value c according to Mean Value Theorem (LMV), such that f'(c) = [f(b) – f(a)]/(b – a).

On which theorem the exercise 5.8 of class 12th Maths is based?
Exercise 5.8 of class 12th Maths is based on the following two theorems:
- Rolle’s Theorem: Let f: [a, b] → R be continuous on [a, b] and differentiable on (a, b), such that f(a) = f(b), where a and b are some real numbers. Then there exists some c in (a, b) such that f′(c) = 0.
- Mean Value Theorem: Let f: [a, b] → R be a continuous function on [a, b] and differentiable on (a, b). Then there exists some c in (a, b) such that f’(c) = (f(b)-f(a))/(b-a).
The Mean Value Theorem (MVT) is an extension of Rolle’s theorem.
