Jansie being mature before her age always used to explain her about hardships of life. Sophie was into her day dreaming and she didn’t live in the present. She was not very strong financially but her dreams were those of the rich which were almost impossible to achieve. Jansie wanted to make a living by doing a small job but Sophie used to dream of becoming an actress. Jansie was serious in life whereas Sophie was absolutely not.
How would you describe the character and temperament of Sophie’s father?
Sophie’s father was like any normal middle class father. He had gained a lot of experience in life by working hard. His temperament was different from rest of the family members because Sophie was not mature by age and she still used to act childish. Her father didn’t like her dreaming and discussions of becoming a big star one day. Even though Sophie’s father was not financially strong, he does not miss a soccer match or going to the pub for his hobbies.
Why did Sophie like her brother Geoff more than any other person? From her perspective, what did he symbolise?
Sophie trusted her brother Geoff more than anyone else because he kept secrets and other stuff to himself and did not tell anyone. The main reason for this was that he was introvert and was lost in himself. Derek also used to make fun of her and his father was short tempered who did not entertain such things. From her perspective, Geoff symbolises an elder brother who has grown up and visited places unknown to her. As an elder brother he also warns Sophie from dreaming of Danny Casey because he knows that she will land into trouble when his sister is faced with bitter truth of life.
What socio-economic background did Sophie belong to? What are the indicators of her family’s financial status?
Sophie belongs to a lower middle class family who could hardly meet necessities of daily life. Luxury was a distant thing for them. This story shows that she lived in a normal house. She had a bed and a stove in the same room with lots of dirty clothes lying on floor. His brother Derek also used to make fun of her for strange dreams. Geoff was an apprentice mechanic and his father too didn’t have a very good job. And keeping all these things in mind, dreams of becoming an actress or opening a boutique used to take Sophie far away from reality. Only a miracle could make her dreams come true.
When she waits for him next week and he doesn’t come, does she stop dreaming?
Sophie is lost in a deep despair as she waits for Danny next week, for which she never knew how many dreams she had dreamed of. Her heart was crying and was not ready to believe that Danny had not come. She was thinking now how will she face the family members.
All the members of the house will get a chance to say that she was always wrong. And with these thoughts she decided to go back home. But as Sophie’s nature she didn’t stop dreaming big. After some time, she again drowned in her thoughts which she had always lived. Big fantasies of becoming an actress or opening a boutique started coming in her mind.
Talking about the text (Page No. 85)
Sophie’s dreams and disappointments are all in her mind.
Everyone has the right to dream but Sophie should have had dreams that could come true considering her financial background. First she should have tried to strengthen her financial background and supported her father. However, her focus was only on weaving dreams of opening a boutique, becoming an actress or going on dates with celebrities. Jansie tried a lot to bring her on the right path, but those things were rarely understood by her. Sophie also dreamed of dating Danny Casey and discussed these things in the family as well. She felt scared but happy inside that a celebrity liked her or came to meet her. However, some people understand only by stumbling in life and Sophie was one of those. This was the reason when she waited for Danny the next week and he did not come, she was very disappointed and felt sad. All thoughts, good and bad, were always running in her mind. Day dreaming had become a habit.
It is natural for teenagers to have unrealistic dreams. What would you say are the benefits and disadvantages of such fantasising?
Teenage is when the child steps out of the world of toys and is welcomed by the reality outside. Books give him knowledge and his future stands in front of him, from which the decision to choose is up to him. Children at this age have different types of dreams and they try to fulfill them. But most children have dreams that are unrealistic. They don’t know the struggles of real life and what the difference is between dreams and reality. Like Sophie had a dream to become an actress but she didn’t have money to go to acting school or open a boutique, because she was from a lower middle class family and she could not fulfill her dream even after taking loan. Or someone has a dream that he should become the Prime Minister of the country and serve the nation but he does not have money to contest elections. We call such dreams as unrealistic dreams.
If you have a desire in your heart that’s so strong you dream of it night and day, its certain that the dream will come true. The only thing you require is to have a zeal or passion to achieve it. There should be dreams in life for which we are firm and concentrated to achieve. Another aspect of dreaming leads to the destruction of teenagers is that it sometimes leads them to despair, depression or suicide. If there is mental stress due to dreaming of any kind, it is obviously a deal of loss.

Class 12 English Chapter 8 Short Answer Type Quesions
- What do Sophie’s dreams reveal about her nature or character?
Sophie’s words seem like she liked a glamorous world. In this story we see that Sophie either wanted to become an actress or a fashion designer or wanted to open a big boutique. She dreamed of a boy who was a famous Irish footballer. She thought so much about him that she only talked to him while sleeping or awake. She was not interested in supporting her family by doing some petty job. - Why was Sophie jealous of her brother’s silence?
The reason for this was that Geoff talked very little. He was introvert and had little talks at home even with family members. Sophie knew he was too mature at a young age and didn’t dream like her. She thought that when Geoff is silent, he must have been thinking something that Sophie did not know. He has seen the outside world and Sophie wanted to see the outside world by riding with him. His being so quiet was an enigma to Sophie. She felt that her life was confined to a limited circle whereas her brother travels around the world. This was the reason behind her jealousy to her brother’s silence.
Class 12 English Chapter 8 Long Answer Type Questions
Why Sophie’s future plans named as dreams?
Sophie’s plans didn’t appear to be future plans because she talked more than she could. If it was about doing a fashion designing course or doing a small job in acting school, then also it was understandable but she wanted to buy a boutique or becoming an actress that too when her financial condition was nothing special. It is such a dream that we can even call it a mental illness. This is because she often thought that Ireland’s great footballer Danny Casey was sitting in front of her and they were talking. Not only did she make fun of these things at home or outside, but she also had to face scolding from her father. She did not take life seriously, and did not put any goal in front of her, despite Jansie persuading her thousands of times.
